Announcing the start of a new music series in Philadelphia!

Tthe Event Horizon series will present a mix of electronic, ambient, experimental and space music.

This kick off event will feature:
Dante Bucci
The Tangent Project
Chuck van Zyl

Dante Bucci fuses world music and melodic indie rock with his pioneering approach to the Hang drum. He is a fixture in the Philly indie music scene and one of the most-recognized Hang players in the world, thanks to a constantly-expanding list of subscribers and over six million views on his YouTube videos (youtube.dantebucci.com).

A relatively new invention, the Hang (pronounced “hung”) is a melodic, inverted steel percussion instrument born in Bern, Switzerland, circa
2000. The Hang looks like a steel drum crossed with a UFO, and has its own distinctive voice that draws comparisons to steel pans, harps, and
even synthesizers. Dante plays past the Hang’s ambient, meditative tendencies with insistent melodies and deft percussive strikes. He creates distinct, compelling, hummable songs, sometimes playing two Hangs at once to create a layered, polyrhythmic sound.

The Tangent Project is:
Jeff Coulter – Electronics
Harrison McKay – Guitar and Devices

The Tangent Project is the most recent incarnation of a musical vision started 30 years ago. Influences are drawn from such disparate genres as Minimalism, the Avant-Garde, Ambient, Prog, IDM, and, of course, the Spacemusic which originated in the 70 and still flows on today. The technology has changed in many ways, but lots of the original tools are still incorporated and are now greatly treasured for their lasting and unique character. Using the best of both old and new instruments and devices, The Tangent Project continues to find new boundaries to push beyond while paying proper homage to those that started these journeys previously.
“The Tangent Project plays with the internalized classicism of musicians who have been listening to Spacemusic even in their sleep.” [Chuck van Zyl - Star's End Radio]

Chuck van Zyl
Best known as host of STAR’S END (WXPN’s renowned radio program of spacemusic dreamscapes), as coordinator of The Gatherings
(Philadelphia’s premiere concert series of innovative music), and as half of the spacemusic duo The Ministry of Inside Things, Chuck van Zyl has also been making his own unique style of electronic music since 1983.

Sometimes referred to as “the children of space”, Chuck van Zyl’s generation of musicians are more than just carrying on an earlier tradition. Seeing creativity as a component of his own personal spirituality, van Zyl’s musical realizations are fueled by everything from music technology to a greater cosmic awareness. His musical sensibilities evoke a sense of discovery, with each concert marking a new frontier of sound.

His 04.01.1 solo concert at Event Horizon will feature Chuck van Zyl’s trademark mastery of synthesized timbres and ethereal atmospheres. The
unique setting of The Rotunda will provide plenty of room to savor each gorgeously sculpted tone. Never thin, always uncluttered, sumptuous minor key drones and spare melodies ascended above pulsing sequencer patterns and provided a sonic compliment to the inner narrative of the audience.

Chuck van Zyl’s latest solo CD is MemorySpace and was released on Synkronos Music on 13 November 2010 to coincide with his performance in Philadelphia at The Gatherings Concert Series.
