The Rotunda presents a very exciting lineup – Sonic Liberation Front is joined by two of our very favorite creative ensembles from Brooklyn: The Gate + Ideal Bread.
Admission: FREE, suggested $8.
Ideal Bread (Brooklyn) is Josh Sinton (baritone saxophone), Kirk Knuffke (cornet), Adam Hopkins(bass), Tomas Fujiwara (drums) – Ideal Bread is one of the most creative and cohesive bands to emerge from New York City in recent years. They were formed by Josh Sinton in 2006, initially as a way of exploring and performing the compositions of Steve Lacy. Like Steve Lacy said, "making music is like a baker making bread, you have to make Ideal Bread every time."
"A repertory band that transcends that terminology." - Evan Haga - JazzTimes
"They embrace the fierce originality and rigor of Lacy's original music and remake it in an utterly distinctive way." - Peter Margasak - Downbeat

The Gate is Dan Peck (tuba, composition), Tom Blancarte (upright bass), and Brian Osborne(percussion) – Moving fluidly between freely improvised music and composition, tuba and bass combine to erode conventional notions of melody and harmony, marching to the rhythm of decaying ship hulls falling against each other, metal scraping against metal. Incomprehensible languages combine with layers of viscous noise to create a suffocating and unrelenting texture of doom.
“They’re more committed and capable in their pursuit of pure heaviosity, the rhythm section proceeding with an impressive blend of aggro and slovenliness while Dan Peck’s tuba slathers thick oily smears of bottom-end brass all over the place.” – The Wire 341
