  • 5:00 PMIn-person! The Crisis This Time: Media, Movements, and Abolition in a Time of Rupture
  • 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Thu Feb 2, 5pm-7:30pm and Fri Feb 3, 9am-5pmFull schedule and registration at: https://www.asc.upenn.edu/news-events/events/crisis-time-media-movements-and-abolition-time-ruptureWe live in a time of rupture. The social, economic, and ecological crises that confront us today compound longstanding inequalities on a global scale. In response to these asymmetries, we are witness to a flourishing of rebellions and resistance movements emerging over the last decade. A major challenge facing contemporary movements is how to harness new and existing media in order to articulate critical interconnections between crises and forms of resistance. Across three main themes—policing the crisis, mediating the crisis, and powering through the crisis—we call together scholars and activists to ask: What is the relationship between media and movements today? What role do media play in building effective resistance? What are the problems and possibilities of the current media ecosystem as we organize to build an effective movement of movements? We convene this conference at an important time for movements to deepen their connections with each other and articulate a positive vision of a free society. This two-day convening will therefore aim to both understand the moment while putting forward possible pathways towards our collective future.

Admission is FREE. Registration is HIGHLY encouraged, as space is limited.

February 9th, 2023, 7pmLili Taylor in Two Indie Classics from the 1990s!HOUSEHOLD SAINTS (1993. directed by Nancy Savoca, 124 minutes, U.S.)I SHOT ANDY WARHOL (1996, Mary Harron, 103 min, U.S.)Hosted by Dan Buskirk (Fleisher Art Memorial, WPRB-Princeton)- - - - -Four generations of an Italian American family are represented in HOUSEHOLD SAINTS, a warm and witty fable of a New York butcher (Vincent D'Onofrio of Kubrick's FULL METAL JACKET) who wins his wife (the multi-talented Tracy Ullman) in a card game. Together they have a daughter Theresa (Lili Taylor) whose devotion to Catholicism is so self-consuming it draws the consternation of their small Italian-American community.HOUSEHOLD SAINTS is the third and most-acclaimed feature from writer/director Nancy Savoca, whose previous film 1989's TRUE LOVE and 1991's DOGFIGHT had earned her a devout following. Savoca finds a dignity and fantastical humor in Theresa saintly ambition and as always Savoca's film is loaded with vivid performances, including from Illeana Douglas and THE SOPRANOS Michael Imperioli as Theresa's befuddled husband. This film has been woefully out-of-circulation since the days of VHS videotape.- - - - -I SHOT ANDY WARHOL is the debut feature from Mary Harron, a writer/director who would go on to her biggest success with her fearless 2000 adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' controversial novel AMERICAN PSYCHO. Harron sets her sights on a different anti-social character here, the Ventnor-born Valerie Solanas, a radical feminist writer scraping by in late '60s New York, recruiting women to join her group S.C.U.M., “the Society for Cutting Up Men”. In this real-life story, Valerie is improbably swept into the periphery of the scene-makers around Andy Warhol's Factory studio and as her artistic ambitions meet frustration, Solanas' fury slowly finds its focus on Warhol himself.Where other filmmakers might have played up Solanas' menace, Harron (with the help of Taylor's committed performance) is empathetic to Solanas' artistic frustrations and her critique of the patriarchy. There's also a lot of humor on the way to tragedy, all set in the heady atmosphere of Warhol's world, populated by trans icon Candy Darling (Steven Dorff), Michael Imperioli (again!) as the Warhol Superstar Ondine, Justin Theroux as a violent radical and MAD MEN's Jared Harris as Warhol himself. With a score by John Cale and Yo La Tengo standing in for The Velvet Underground.- - - -Masking is encouraged. Seating is limited.Follow brightbulbscreenings on Instagram, Facebook

  • 8:00 PMIn-person! Bowerbird pres. Ensemble Terrain (Jacob Cooper, Jodie Landau, Ashley Bathgate, Thann Scoggin)
  • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM Bowerbird is pleased to present Ensemble Terrain (Theo Bleckmann*, Jodie Landau, Ashley Bathgate, and Jacob Cooper) performing selections from Jacob Cooper’s acclaimed album “Terrain” (Amsterdam Records, 2020).  “Terrain” displays Cooper’s passion for kinetic collaboration. He worked intensively with three poets who created original text for each work, and developed the music alongside vocalists Theo Bleckmann and Jodie Landau, as well as cellist Ashley Bathgate, who each bring electric energy and a penchant for defying musical boundaries to the project.  This concert will feature works from this album, as well as arrangements of works by Meredith Monk, David Lang, Supertramp, and others.

*Unfortunately Theo Bleckmann will not be able to perform on this evening’s concert as was previously planned. We’re excited, however, to announce that the extraordinary vocalist Thann Scoggin (member of Roomful of Teeth) will be performing with the ensemble in his stead.

    ABOUT THE ENSEMBLE

Ensemble Terrain was formed as a touring outfit following the release of Cooper’s album “Terrain” (New Amsterdam Records, 2020). Pitchfork characterizes the album as “surprisingly magnetic meditations on time . . . vital and compulsive . . . firmly rooted both in the distant past and music much closer to the present” while San Francisco Classical Voice describes it as “a beautiful way to look at sky when sky is not available.” In their individual careers, GRAMMY-nominated vocalist Theo Bleckmann’s work has been hailed as “from another planet” (New York Times) and “transcendent” (Village Voice), and cellist Ashley Bathgate has been praised as an “eloquent new music interpreter” (New York Times) and “a glorious cellist” (The Washington Post). “Stunning” vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jodie Landau (Pitchfork) is a member of the acclaimed vocal octet Roomful of Teeth, while Jacob Cooper has been lauded as “richly talented” (New York Times) and a “maverick electronic song composer” (New Yorker).

Admission is FREE/pay-what-you-can. More info: https://www.bowerbird.org/event/ensemble-terrain/

PLEASE NOTE: As of January 2023, masks are welcomed, but no longer required at Bowerbird events.

Is it news? Yes it is. Since centuries we always listen to men’s music, men’s bands, male composers and leaders, etc. Ok, but the women are here now! So, this sextet proposes to compose and to improvise music, their own music. Here you find a beautiful meeting of deep listening and simple structures, melodic and fragile sometimes. It’s just wonderful, with deep soul coming from afar, from the earth… From the truth they come! Please, listen to them. Go on, Lantana.
