  • 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS!From Brujo de la Mancha:La ofrenda de la pandemia Covid-19.I am planning to create a community ofrenda for the Day of the Dead, outside on The Rotunda's Front Plaza (the brick courtyard on the Walnut Street side of the building) for a few days. Everyone can contribute to this ofrenda from November 1st through November 5th, 2021.Come by any time day or night starting Monday November 1 at 5pm to leave items for the ofrenda. The ofrenda will come down at 7pm Friday November 5.There will also be live Aztec dancing and drumming from Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac (7pm) + a paper flower workshop (6-8pm) on Tuesday November 2, also on the front plaza. I'm inviting the community to participate, to add some kind of input. I'm the display/artist fixing the finished product/installation of the ofenda. I will make sets where people can put whatever they want.Ofrendas are a very visual, colorful, and emotional representation of a party or altar for the people that pass away! People use many different items that represent or give meaning to what they feel or think is good to give or would feel good to the souls of the loved ones. This ofrenda will be open to everyone who wants to offer something (it can be anything) to those who died during the Covid-19 pandemic. To me, this project is not limited to those who died from the virus. I think it is important to consider the impact of this pandemic in general. People die alone with the virus or not.Flowers donated by Zoe Fox Flowers!! Program NotesFrom 1977 - 1994, guitarist and free improvisation pioneer Derek Bailey ran his festival Company Weeks, bringing together improvising and experimental musicians from across the world. His collective group Company aimed to bring together exciting combinations of musicians who might not have otherwise have had the chance to play together.

community brings together improvising and experimental musicians from across the city of Philadelphia who should have had regular chances to play together and regularly cross paths in a vibrant musical ecosystem. The piece is a storyline of musical scenes that will unfold over three 30-minute performances. Each set will introduce new scenes as the musicians, many of whom have not played with each other either ever or at least in over a year, get more and more in tune as individuals and as an ensemble.

The aim of community is to set up a kind of temporary musical biosphere for an afternoon where we musicians will interact with each other in exciting and fun ways and invite a small audience to join us on the inside. The scenes of the piece are designed to mimic some of the actions of a healthy music scene: getting to know each other, jamming, forming bands, having shared sounds or repertoire. It is my hope that participating in music making drawn from these kinds of activities will give people energy to go out and do that work beyond the one day of our performance.

It has been a hell of a year and a quarter since life drastically changed for so many of us. While the world of live music in Philadelphia and beyond is reawakening, many of us feel that things will never be the same. One thing I am committed to more than ever coming out of this is making room for people to show up as their full selves, especially when creating something collectively. community is a small chance to draw on all that is great about the creative music of Philadelphia: it’s people and sounds, past and present, to do just that.

I hope you come watch us, and I hope you enjoy the music.

    Sincerely, Dan Blacksberg

Dan Blacksberg forges a singular voice as a composer, trombonist, and educator by bridging multiple paths of music making from the traditional to the avant-garde. Dan is recognized as one of the foremost practitioners of traditional klezmer trombone, and is a respected voice in jazz, new music, and free improvisation. His work includes genre-busting compositions like chamber suite Name Of The Sea, commissioned by the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, performances with Anthony Braxton and doom metal band The Body, and work with klezmer luminaries such as Frank London, Elaine Hoffman Watts, Michael Winograd, and The Other Europeans. Dan currently teaches jazz and klezmer at Temple University, coordinates the Instrumental and Dance programs at Yiddish New York with Deb Strauss, and is the musician-in-residence at Kol Tzedek Synagogue. He also makes the Radiant Others Klezmer Podcast.

    DOUBLE FEATURE!

(Hosted by Dan Buskirk - WPRB, Fleisher Arts Memorial)

THE DAY SHALL COME (2019, directed by Chris Morris, 87 minutes, U.K./U.S.)THE STORY OF A THREE-DAY PASS (aka “La Permission”) (1967, directed by Melvin Van Peebles, 87 minutes, France)Two concise comedies/social commentaries on the bill, first is British director Chris Morris' devastating and under-seen 2019 film, THE DAY SHALL COME. Morris' comic expose details the FBI's record of first dreaming up terrorist schemes, then recruiting gullible citizens to entrap. Here, special agents recruit the horse-mounted Moses of Miami (North Philly-born theater actor Marchánt Davis in his film debut) and step-by-step attempt to radicalize him and his handful of followers' preposterous beliefs. Also starring Danielle Brooks (Taystee from ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK), Anna Kendrick and comedian Jim Gaffigan. Heavily inspired by the case of “The Liberty City Seven.”The only thing more outrageous than the jokes are the facts that inspired it.”- Pete Debruge, VARIETYSecond-billed is the 1967 debut of the recently-transitioned director Melvin Van Peebles (SWEET SWEETBACK's BADASS SONG), THE STORY OF A THREE-DAY PASS. The French New Wave inspired hundreds of films but only one was made in France by an African American expatriate. Based on Van Peebles' autobiographical novel, THREE-DAY PASS examines the mind-set of Corporal Turner (Harry Baird, stirring in his only leading role) as he hits Paris looking for romance on a weekend leave from the barracks. Van Peebles is determined to dazzle and the film is awash with surreal asides and satiric barbs as he illustrates the inner and outer turmoil inherent in being a black man in France in the 1960s. The film features the final performance of Nicole Berger from Truffaut's SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER and includes music by guitar great Mickey Baker.“A kind of gentle cross between 'Hiroshima Mon Amour' and 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner'—a little hard to imagine, it is true, but less pretentious than the first and less false than the second.”- Renata Adler, The New York Times

    Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac

Meaning “School of Blood Moving in the Heart” in the Nahuatl language of the Aztecs, Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac is a dance and cultural troupe based in the heart of South Philadelphia. A visually captivating portrait of the group told through their own voices, Aztec Dance in Philadelphia raises

questions about indigenous history and the retention of cultural heritage in the context of modern immigration. “We consider it a school because we are learning about the culture we have lost,” says one of the group’s members. The dancers of Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac bring their audiences a pre-Columbian heritage with roots in central Mexico. Kept alive by modern keepers of the culture like those in this trilingual Spanish/English/Nahuatl documentary, Aztec dance has followed the paths of contemporary Mexican immigrants into the United States. That migration has brought Aztec culture here, to Philadelphia. Aztec Dance in Philadelphia is an engaging resource for educators teaching modern immigration and a colorful testament to the resilience of indigenous cultures. facebook.com/oycphiladelphia, ollinyoliztlicalmecac.org

Sonic Flower ReikiSound™ (a.k.a. Scott Soniq)

From Philadelphia, this certified Reiki Master and ReikiSound ™ Immersion practitioner is also a seasoned DJ and producer. Throughout the years, Scott’s experiences showed him the immense healing potentials that sound can deliver; this was coupled with 25 years of independent study and self-evolution. His amazing Journey led presently to many diverse communities in the Philadelphia area. One present aspect of Scott’s Journey is Sonic Flower: a totally immersive and Life Enhancing sound experience. Participants rest horizontally or seated comfortably while bathed in the sound-field from 7 quartz crystal singing bowls. The tones emanated are deeply resonant and are not only heard, but can be felt in one’s body; immersed in a field of deep coherence -- a structured yet always-evolving cache of information that is rich in potential and waiting to be tapped. Typical ReikiSound™  Immersions usually last for 60-75 minutes and can be merged with your Inner or Outer Work.

Private and couples sessions are offered, which are tailored to the client’s needs, or group ReikiSound™ Immersions are offered in which a field of vibration is created intuitively for the highest benefit of the whole group. Also offered are Sonic Chakra Tune-ups, which require active participation by the client. Sonic Flower is also open and available to collaborate on any appropriate workshop/event.

Sonic Flower also creates deep-listening ambient DJ sets using self-produced, as well as other producer’s musics. He also creates  ecstatic-body-music-DJ-sets under the moniker Butter&Eggs. • 11:00 PMOnline! Liminal States featuring Percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani
  • 11:00 PM - 11:45 PM

Bowerbird is pleased to present Liminal States, a series of late night, live streamed concerts intended to be listened to as you fall asleep. Aiming to center and calm, the musicians will seek to lead listeners to that magic space between awake and asleep. Tune in and bliss out. Percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani will perform multiple bowed gongs from the desert near his home in New Mexico.

This event is part of the Liminal States Series

ABOUT THE ARTISTTatsuya Nakatani is an avant-garde percussionist, composer, and artist of sound. Active internationally since the 1990’s; Nakatani has released over 80 recordings and tours extensively, performing over 150 concerts a year. His primary focus is his solo work and his large ensemble project, the Nakatani Gong Orchestra. With his activity in the new music, improvisation and experimental music scenes, Nakatani has a long history of collaboration. He teaches master classes and lectures at universities and music conservatories around the world. Originally from Japan, he makes his home in the desert town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Nakatani creates his distinctive music centered around his adapted bowed gong, supported by an array of drums, cymbals, and singing bowls. In consort with his hand carved Kobo Bows, it is an instrument he has spent decades developing. Nakatani approaches his orchestral project (NGO) as an arrangement of formations of vibrations, incorporated in shimmering layers of silence and texture. Within this contemporary work, one can still recognize the dramatic pacing, formal elegance and space (ma) felt in traditional Japanese music.

Admission to this online event is Free / Pay What You Wish. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Please register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tatsuya-nakatani-tickets-204673342477 A link will be sent to you the day of the event. The performance will start at 11:00pm Eastern Time and will run approximately 45 mins.
