WHAT: A queer, feminist, experimental + therapeutic take on punk song writing, interlaced with anti-Zionist Jewish ritual and mysticism. • 8:00 PMIn-person! Secret Cinema presents A CHILD'S INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL GUIDANCE FILMS
  • 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM Secret Cinema presents A CHILD'S INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL GUIDANCE FILMS We've shown many themed groupings of short films over the 33+ years of Secret Cinema programming -- nights devoted to music films, travel films, old color films, TV commercials, stag films, World War II films, films made in the 1970s, films made in Philadelphia, and yes, even boring films. But surprisingly, only once did we devote an entire program to the now-celebrated social guidance film.A subset of the educational, or classroom film genre, social guidance films exist not to teach children the traditional school wisdom of history, science and grammar, but to impart to their unformed minds the correct attitudes and behavior. They came into their own in the post-war years, and were omnipresent in American schools in the 1950s and '60s. They were rediscovered in documentaries like THE ATOMIC CAFE, in the 1999 book MENTAL HYGIENE, and on cable television and numerous home video compilations. The Congress-created National Film Registry has even selected one of the most (in)famous social guidance films, DUCK AND COVER, for eternal preservation. We thought it was time we dusted off one of our favorite programs (which last screened at Moore College of Art & Design in 2006). While these kinds of films have made appearances throughout the history of Secret Cinema (within other programs and before feature films), on Thursday, September 11, we will again compile some of the best S.G. reels from our private archive into one big show. And while social guidance films can be found everywhere nowadays (yep, on the internet too), the best way to see them is in the dark -- using real film projected onto a big screen (albeit a screen much bigger than found in any classroom), among a group of one's peers (albeit peers many years past the target audience of most of these films). As usual, this Secret Cinema program will be projected in 16mm film on a giant screen (not video). There will be one complete show at 8pm. Admission is FREE.A CHILD'S INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL GUIDANCE FILMS will include several rare titles not seen in many years. They will span many different eras and include examples of work from important producers of social guidance film like Coronet (originally a division of Esquire Magazine) and Young America Films. Just a few highlights will be: COURTESY AT SCHOOL, HELPERS IN THE COMMUNITY, WHAT IS A CONTRACT?, TOWARD EMOTIONAL MATURITY, WHAT DOES OUR FLAG MEAN? and IT'S WONDERFUL BEING A GIRL.SECRET CINEMA WEBSITE: https://www.thesecretcinema.com

  • 6:00 PMFree screening of Ani DiFranco documentary 1-800-On-Her-Own
  • 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM Screening of the documentary 1-800-On-Her-Own Directed by Dana FlorRuntime: 1 hour, 19 minutesWATCH THE TRAILER HEREAt age 15, feminist icon and activist Ani DiFranco was an emancipated minor and a singer-songwriter star in the coffee house music scene. At 19, she started Righteous Babe, her own record label, and released her self-titled first album a year later in 1990 — followed by 22 albums over the next 33 years and collaborations with Pete Seeger, Cyndi Lauper, and Prince. With intimate access to the 54-year-old’s creative and personal life — she is bisexual, married, a mother of two, and still “DIY all the way” — Dana Flor introduces the viewer to an artistically evolving, ardently self-evaluating version of the rebel prodigy; and draws decades-long fans into the vulnerable, real-time struggles of a middle-aged righteous babe. Producer: Amy Hobby, Executive Producer: Alex AppelAdmission is FREE. Registration is not required but helps us gauge interest. Register HERE

“the film is so wonderful. At such a crucial time in our country’s history for women, marginalized people, and frankly every person who values love and inclusivity, this film is an urgent call to action as well as an action plan for those who give a damn. ”

  • 7:00 PMIn-person! Klorkhana: The Tyrant - World Premiere of a Science Fiction Opera about a Tyrant who takes over a planet
  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

A WORLD PREMIERE OPERA ABOUT THE BATTLE OF BATTLES!

Philadelphia, PA--- “Klorkhana: The Tyrant,” will be presented in full in a concert setting.  Both book and music were written by Kate Quinn.

Klorkhana is the official Mind Healer of the planet of Sephro but instead of healing minds, he corrupts them.  He projects false love into people in exchange for stealing their energies for his own use.  His favorite thing to do is rob women of their special spiritual essences that help heal minds and bodies in ways men can’t duplicate.  Klorkhana and many men of Sephro are envious of women for having certain gifts men don’t possess.  Instead of appreciating what they have, they want what they don’t have, at any cost.  Klorkhana soon has almost every man on planet Sephro following him, particularly one susceptable young man named Aulio.  Together, he and Klorkhana are determined to steal what women have, and use it for themselves.

Only Coran, Warrior Overseer and Security Chief of the entire planet, her mate Tanna and Klorkhana’s former mate Destylla are able to form an army to stop this tyrant.  No matter what the outcome, these rebels are determined to bring Planet Sephro back to its former glory.

The opera concert will take place with the Philly Fringe on Thursday, September 18th at 7pm, and Friday, September 19th at 7pm.  Admission is Pay What You Can!

  • 7:00 PMIn-person! The Breath Between — the phenomenon of story
  • 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Denise McCormack returns to Philadelphia with The Breath Between, an intimate storytelling performance that invites audiences on a journey through stories and songs imbued with moments of clarity. These are the rare instances when time seems to willingly freeze, allowing the observer to gaze in stillness, to savor the subtle nuances of meaning until they coalesce into a deep revelation. Such moments become lifelong tools—gifts meant to be shared.

In this evocative show, McCormack weaves myth, memory, and melody to explore how wonder and story converge into knowing—those transformative flashes of insight that strike like lightning and resonate deeply within us. Audiences are invited not just to listen, but to pause, reflect, and share in the quiet shock of revelation that changes how we see ourselves and the world around us.

Tickets are free, with a suggested donation of $15 per person to support the artist and future performances. Pay What You Can options ensure accessibility for all. Purchase tickets HERE

This event is recommended for adult audiences.
