  • 3:00 PMBecky Butterfly and the Story of the Wayward Wasp
  • 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM FANTASY WEAVERS Original Opera and Theatre for Children and Adults Presents “Becky Butterfly and the Story of the Wayward Wasp “ "Becky Butterfly and the Story of the Wayward Wasp,” was written and composed by Kate Quinn, ©2011.  It is a children’s musical play that focuses on a wasp who, by some strange event of nature, has been born a "male worker."   In the insect world, "worker wasps" are always female, and "drone wasps" are always male. However, Kevin Wasp finds himself with a stinger (a gift that no drone has ever been given) and the ability to fly large distances and forage in meadows for nectar; activities usually reserved for "garden variety" female workers. Because Kevin is obviously a male performing female tasks, no worker or drone wants to associate with him. They ostracize him, and bully him terribly. The queen wasp, who also finds Kevin strange, makes very little attempt to stop the other wasps from attacking him. Kevin takes his frustration and anger out on Becky Butterfly and her family by invading their meadow, implementing scare tactics, and attempting to kidnap their offspring (caterpillars). Yet Becky does not take too kindly to being bullied.  As she starts laying out the groundwork for her plan of retribution, she overhears Kevin lamenting about his plight at home. Becky is touched and realizes the truth that is underlying Kevin's bad attitude. His aggression does not merely reflect the nature of a wasp searching for food; it is actually the result of the frustration Kevin suffers from being so horribly ostracized and bullied by his peers. Becky changes her mind about Kevin and decides to befriend him. She also hopes that her friendship will transform him from enemy to ally. Becky resolves to go to the queen wasp's nest on Kevin's behalf, to appeal to the queen's sense of justice and to beg her to abolish the bullying that Kevin has endured for so long. Becky Butterfly is a sparkling, color-filled romp into the world of life-sized wasps and flighty, effervescent butterflies.  It provides a joyous, exciting way to learn one of life’s most important lessons:  “It’s OK to be different”.  “Becky Butterfly and the Story of the Wayward Wasp” is a perfect afternoon’s entertainment for the entire family! • 8:00 PMZeke Peterhoff's Your Uncle Sam - An American Vaudeville Celebration
  • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM Zeke Peterhoff's Your Uncle Sam An American Vaudeville Celebration "Peterhoff's Your Uncle Sam" is a first person, unabashedly patriotic, salute to our American Spirit presented by America's oldest citizen.  It is intended to honor our shared 235 year history and to clarify the inspirations which helped produce our patriarchal mythical figure. As I myself have been a theatre clown and teacher of clowns for over forty years, I am particularly interested in having the 19th century clown, Dan Rice, whose beard and costume are the visual foundation of Uncle Sam's appearance publicly acknowledged.  This show, a solo tour d' force, has been in development since 1999 and is also a vaudeville revue and a clown show continuously peppered throughout with, circus, music, magic and movement arts. Admission is FREE; donations accepted gladly.

  • 8:00 PMAs Nova Workshops pres. Joshua Abrams's Natural Information Society
  • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM Ars Nova Workshop presents Joshua Abrams's Natural Information Society Joshua Abrams, bass + guimbri Chad Taylor, drums Join Ars Nova Workshop for a free concert at The Rotunda by the Natural Information Society, Chicago multi-instrumentalist Joshua Abrams's latest duo project with drummer Chad Taylor. “A super psychedelic and ultimately beautiful journey,” Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker wrote for Waxpoetics about multi-instrumentalist Joshua Abrams's Natural Information (Eremite; 2010). Abrams's debut album under the Natural Information moniker—which featured a quintet with vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz, guitarist Emmet Kelly, drummers Frank Rosaly and Noritaka Tanaka, and Abrams primarily playing a North African bass lute called a guimbri—earned a spot on the year-end lists of The Wire, Dusted, and Foxy Digitalis, and The New York Times's Ben Ratliff called it “one of the rough gems of the post-everything musical era.” Abrams, a native of Philadelphia, has been a heavy-hitter on the Chicago scene for over 15 years. He has worked with experimental jazz legends like Roscoe Mitchell and Bill Dixon, up-and-comers like Nate Wooley and Craig Taborn, indie artists like Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Sam Prekop (The Sea & Cake), and hip hop artists such as Prefuse 73 and Philly's The Roots. He's also the co-founder of Town & Country and has released four albums under his own name, including 2006's highly celebrated Reminder. For this performance, the Natural Information Society will feature a duo with Abrams and drummer Chad Taylor, who's a member of the Chicago Underground Duo and has worked with Marc Ribot, Ken Vandermark, and Pharoah Sanders. Abrams and Taylor have partnered many times over the years, most notably in their trio with saxophonist Matana Roberts, Sticks & Stones. Admission is FREE

  • 8:00 PMBowerbird presents POWERS OF TEN and other Experimental Documentary Shorts
  • 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM Bowerbird presents POWERS OF TEN and other Experiemental Documentary Shorts Curated by Thomas Patteson. When we think of documentary films, we probably call to mind certain familiar forms, such as archival footage of World War II battles or British-accented narration of natural scenes. But conceived in the broadest terms, the documentary is an extremely diverse cinematic genre with at least as much room for artistic experimentation as the fictional film. This program is intended to trace the fascinating variety of short documentary films, which spans the roughly century-long history of cinema itself. In different ways, the films featured in this program explore the possible meanings of cinema as a vehicle for human knowledge and aesthetic pleasure. Some are self-consciously experimental, while others challenge us through their historical and cultural distance from our ingrained habits of perception. All these films both expand our experience of the world and force us to re-examine our comfortable relationship with the "reality" that film presents. The program will consist of two roughly 45-minute sections with a brief intermission in between. Admission is FREE

Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=275429032479518 F! Gypsy Medicine Show www.deathwaltz.com/artists/f Through a lens tinted by Spaghetti Western fantasies and Bollywood dreams, the Philadelphia based ensemble, F!, creates an atmosphere akin to a Fellini film or a haunting Man Ray photograph. By twisting cartoons that once fed our minds as children into a repressed music for the villain, the bands first full length release, “An Adonis” echoes that of a deranged expressionist fairy tale. Throughout the album, the compositions toy with the idea of shifting between cinematic nostalgia by mocking and exaggerating the idea of genre. In a 2007 City Paper article for their debut CD release, Shaun Brady asked the reader to “just imagine Dick Dale persuading some Viennese opera house to let him perform the works of Raymond Scott with a circus band.” Now imagine that band as a full blown chamber orchestra… Well that is precisely how the music of F! has evolved. In fact, there are no remaining original members of the group. Music is still being written, mainly by original F! guitarist Justin Berger, who has since taken on the role of Musical Director of the group.
