SEATING IS LIMITED FOR PURPOSES OF SOCIAL DISTANCING, ADVANCED REGISTRATION IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Please register HEREIan Nagoski: Zabelle Panosian: I Am Servant of Your Voice (talk & listening session)Fire Museum PresentsMusicologist Ian Nagoski will present his latest project in the form of a talk and listening session.Among the most significant Armenian singers in the early twentieth century, Zabelle Panosian made a small group of recordings in New York City in 1917-’18. Unaccountably, she was then largely neglected as an artist for more than half a century. This volume by three dedicated researchers is the first effort to reconstruct the life and work of a woman who had an exceptional and cultivated voice — who toured the world as a performer and made a significant contribution to the cultural lives of the Armenian diaspora, the elevation of Armenian art song, and the relief of survivors of the Armenian genocide.Panosian’s music is derived from a syncretic experience of the Western Armenian village near the sea of Marmara where she was born and a passion for the coloratura sopranos she encountered in Boston. As an immigrant carrying the traumas of dislocation and the loss of her home, she transformed her grief into action, dedicated her life to an expression of the greatest art she could imagine, both from her former life and her new life in America, and she created a path in her wake for her daughter to become a renowned dancer.Tracing her story from the Ottoman Empire to New England, from the concert halls of Italy, Egypt, and France to California, Florida, and South America through two World Wars, the story of Zabelle Panosian is that of a serious talent recognized and celebrated, dismissed and forgotten, year by year, waiting only to be known and loved again.Ian Nagoski is a music researcher and record producer in Baltimore, Maryland. For more than a decade, he has produced dozens of reissues of early 20th century recordings in languages other than English for labels including Dust-to-Digital, Tompkins Square, his own Canary Records, and others. His enthusiastic talks have been hosted at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., the Onassis Cultural Center in Athens Greece, the University of Chicago, and New York University, and he has presented his work in installation at the Museum fur Naturkunde in Berlin Germany, the Wellcome Center in London England, and the Peale Center in Baltimore Maryland. A fragment of his work is included on the MoonkArk, the first object to be permanently installed on the moon, in 2020.“A carefully crafted and detailed, yet succinct biography. Many of us were introduced to Armenian-American singer Zabelle Panosian’s soul-jolting rendition of “Groung” via the 2011 release of To What Strange Place, but here, in Zabelle Panosian: I Am Your Servant, for the first time, we travel with Panosian from her birthplace in Bardizag to her home in New York. We are there in the studio with her at Columbia Records for her historic recordings in lower Manhattan, and we stand with her in the radio studios of WEAF. We become readers of reviews of Panosian’s concerts both celebrated and scathing. We accompany her on performances, minuscule and grand from Waterford to Providence and San Francisco to Fresno, eventually recrossing the Atlantic with her to sing in France, Italy, and Egypt. More than a singer or performer, we learn of Zabelle, the estranged sister, the loving aunt, and the mother who passes the baton to her daughter, Adrina Otero, completing what will be the starting point for future historians or ethnomusicologists wishing to explore Zabelle Panosian and her legacy.”-Richard Breaux, Associate Professor of Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, University of Wisconsin-La CrosseZabelle Panosian – I Am Servant of Your Voice book & CDto be published April 7, 2022 by Canary Books & Records, Baltimore MD80 pages. 21 tracks. • 3:00 PMOnline! Ask A Survivor play reading + Q&A on Zoom
  • 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Live virtual performance of the interactive play Ask A Sex Abuse Survivor

From Children's Advocacy Centers of Pennsylvania: "We hosted a virtual performance of Ask A Survivor and it felt just as dynamic and interactive as an in-person event. This show is as honest as it gets about the hard reality of child sexual abuse. As Michael tastefully recreates through dramatic monologue the most painful scenes of his childhood, we become "witnesses" to the abuse that Michael suffered alone and in silence for so many years. Yet this carefully guided journey does not abandon its audience in those dark places of memory. Michael strikes a "just-right" balance between raw emotional intensity and self-reflective commentary. Each memory-scene is followed by an opportunity for audience engagement—and Michael creates a genuinely safe space for participants to ask questions about this very sensitive topic. The brilliance of Michael's approach comes down to this Q&A—without realizing it, we have been empowered to have a conversation that is still so taboo in our society. We leave the performance feeling compelled to pay greater attention to victims and survivors, to feel their pain more deeply, and to act more decisively to protect children from abuse."

Doors at 8, show at 8:30, all ages welcome.Spectrum 3 is a fiery, but soulful vanguard music trio that combines “the cry” of jazz with various other idioms, including the raw aesthetic of their Detroit home and the extended technique explorations of the avant-garde. Drawing on a large body of composed material, the group varies every show’s balance of pure improvisation with playing - and playing-off of - the themes of bandleader and saxophonist Skeeter Shelton. He’s joined by Joel Peterson on double-bass and Jim Baljo on drums. Now in his mid-60s, Shelton is finally getting the notoriety he has long deserved. As the son of drummer and Association for the Advancement of Creative Music (AACM) charter member, Ajaramu Shelton, Skeeter was largely raised by organist Amina Claudine Meyers and grew up around many of his parents’ collaborators and employers, including Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman and Fred Anderson. His early musical study was with harpist Dorothy Ashby and organist Lyman Woodard. Shelton has been a member of Hakim Jami’s Street Band, The Vizitors, The Northwoods Improvisers, The Soar Trio (with pianist Thollem), The Faruq Z. Bey Quartet, the United States Army Band and Joe Tex’s group. He has performed and/or recorded with Fred Anderson, James Blood Ulmer, Han Bennink, Dennis Gonzales James Carter and Dushun Mosley. Peterson is a founding member of Immigrant Suns; Cycle of Rejuvenation (with William Hooker); BoxDeserter and Soar Trio with Thollem; Agape Trio (with Alex Harding); Scavenger Quartet (with Frank Pahl); Kindred (with Faruq Z. Bey); Viands, and rock-hybrid improvisers Chatoyant. Peterson also owns and operates the art space Trinosophes in Detroit.James Baljo is best-known as the former guitarist of noise darlings Wolf Eyes, but he also performs solo guitar-with-tape-machine sets as 696 Blues Band, plays drums and percussion in improvising hybrid band Chatoyant and performs various electronics in CJS. His extensive touring has crossed the US, Europe and parts of the Middle East. Proof of vaccination and masks are required, and the event is free but donations for the musicians are strongly suggested. Trevor Dunn:

Trevor Dunn was born in 1968 behind the Redwood Curtain in The Emerald Triangle traversing a fine line between hippies and rednecks. This West Philly-based ensemble draws inspiration from Eastern European customs to exhibit songs from countries like Ukraine, Bulgaria, Poland, and Russia. Through the traditional use of chest voice, Sing Slavic celebrates the Slavic folk tradition through creativity, accessibility, and unapologetic self-expression.Sing Slavic began in 2011 as the Philadelphia Women’s Slavic Ensemble. PWSE was initially just a few friends sharing Slavic folk songs with each other. Since then, we have outgrown both the West Philly living rooms and the name. In 2021, the group adopted its current name, Sing Slavic, to better reflect its members’ identities.Layer Meat:Layer Meat is Anna Young. Artist, composer and performer.
