  • Thumb rotundawomynsfest2020 4x6 frontwebsite 7:00 PM - 10:30 PM WOMYNSFEST CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF SPOTLIGHTING WOMEN IN THE ARTSMarch is Women’s Month and what better way to kick it off than with a free, multi-genre evening planned, promoted, produced, hosted, and performed by women? On Sunday March 1, 2020 at 7pm, Vitamin D Productions brings the annual Womynsfest back to The Rotunda at 4014 Walnut Street in West Philadelphia. With this year’s theme, A Celebration of Life, Womynsfest hits its 20th year and becomes Philadelphia’s longest running, free festival supporting and showcasing women in the arts. As women still fight against discrimination in the workplace, the wage gap, sexual harassment, body autonomy and reproductive justice, and so much more, a festival that uplifts women is needed.  Originally known as the Female Series and having found a home at The Rotunda almost from the beginning, Womynsfest is the brainchild of renaissance woman and Philadelphian Denice Witkowski AKA Vitamin D. Witkowski has maintained this festival and kept it relevant by seeking out all types of performers and giving them a shot even if they’re just starting out; this festival has never been about pedigree or prestige but has always been a warm, inviting, supportive space in which all people of all genders and identities are welcome to attend and take in music, dance, film, visual art, etc. Several audience members catch the festival every year without fail, while new audiences always show up.Over the years, Womynsfest has hosted a diverse line up that reflects the enormous talent and spirit in our city and region, including but not limited to: breast cancer survivors speaking on stage and depicted in photo and painted portraits; poets and spoken word artists; West African percussionists and educators; Irish folk dancers; Indigenous singers and poets; burlesque performers; belly dancers; hoop dancers; singer songwriters; rock and punk bands; visual artists; and independent businesswomen selling homemade food, jewelry, textiles, and more. This year’s festival features old and new friends including GhettoSongBird, Mia Johnson, Line, Ascxnsion, Vassal, and more to be announced soon. Info on the ArtistsGHETTOSONGBIRD is a bohemian North Philadelphia singer/songwriter/guitarist who started singing, playing piano by ear and writing poetry locked in her room while her siblings played outside. Raised on her Mama’s old LPs & living room jams, she was inspired to perform in talent shows to try out new songs. When GhettoSongBird picked up the guitar by ear she flew right into the open mic scene and began jamming with musicians who played with legends like Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, Chaka Khan, Tupac, New Birth, and Fishbone to name a hand full that grew her chops as a guitarist & bassist. GSB is influenced by Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, P-Funk, Led Zeppelin, Mandrill, Santana, The Doors, The Bar-Kays, Sly & The Family-Stone, Earth Wind & Fire, Wah-Wah Watson, Prince, Lenny Kravitz, and any exotic sound she could wrap her ears around. She and her Roxploitation Band have performed at legendary rock venues around the world including CBGB;S (NYC) The Whisky A Go-Go (L.A.) and The Troubadour (London) to name a few. https://www.facebook.com/The.Official.GhettoSongBird MIA JOHNSONOriginally from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Mia Johnson has been in Philadelphia making music for over a decade-and-a-half. She got her start busking on South Street, then onto Philly venues, the recording studio, and independent tours of the East Coast and Midwest. Over the years she has performed as a solo act with just acoustic guitar, as frontwoman in a full rock band, as a backing vocalist in various projects and theatrically as June Carter in a Johnny Cash tribute act. Mia’s songwriting reflects her interest and love for just about every style of music there is. The sound is rhythmically varied, rich in melody and very-chill-to-really-rockin’ with its strongest influences rooted in folk, blues, reggae and of course, rock n’ roll. http://miajohnson.net LINEASCXNSIONVASSAL, also known as Sarah Chodak, will return to the stage again this year. Vassal came to Womynsfest at the age of 14, blowing the minds of our audience and is now returning at the age of 16. Vassal is a Philadelphia-based singer songwriter who is driven by emotion and the world around her. http://www.vassalmusic.comAnd!! Thursday June 11, 2020: A MAGGOT TANGO (1995, directed by Andrew Repasky McElhinney, 33 minutes, U.S.)
KIDS (1995, directed by Larry Clark, 100 minutes, U.S.)
hosted by Andrew Repasky McElhinney (director of CHRONICLE OF CORPSES, CHRISTMAS DREAMS)The Underground legend surfaces for one night only! The 25th anniversary 4K digital restoration of director Andrew Repasky McElhinney's third movie, A Maggot Tango.  Filmed when he was sixteen years old in the woods and old public buildings around Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, A Maggot Tango is now in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York.Shot as a silent on B&W Ilford 16MM negative film, and matched in post-production to an electric playlist on the soundtrack, A Maggot Tango follows the descent of a young woman named "A" (18-year-old Erica Downie, in a committed and fearless performance) who runs away from home, and perhaps kills herself, only to become trapped in an increasingly surreal nightmare filled with her disturbed parents, an angel, a dead little boy, a car crash, two random polysexual hook-ups, drugs, cannibals, and the specter of Death herself as well as several tango dance sequences.Operatic, strange, grotesque, violently comic. Inspired by silent movies, the avant-garde cinema of the 20s, 30s, 40 & 50s, the underground films of the 1960s, and the cult movies of the 1970s. Part lyrical art film, part seedy sexploitation picture. Come celebrate A Maggot Tango, a pivotal early work from Andrew Repasky McElhinney, one of our great contemporary film directors.Director, cast and crew in attendance.Second feature:KIDS (1995 / 100 minutes)"That summer we made A Maggot Tango, we would film during the day, and go to clubs, or house parties, or diners, or go see Kids at night. Kids was 18+ so we had to get around that but we must-of seen the picture five or six times. If those kids weren't us, they were certainly kids we knew, and it was so thrilling, empowering, and sad, to see a version of our maladjusted world, up there on screen, as we were living it."—Andrew Repasky McElhinney Photographer turned director Larry Clark and screenwriter Harmony Korine's very-90s classic is a prurient, reactionary scare film rubbing your face in the way it is. However, reactionary melodrama is transformed by breathtaking cinematography (Eric Edwards), editing (Christopher Tellefsen) and raw and fearless performances from the cast (including the big screen debuts of future stars Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny).

HOWEVER, THIS CLOSURE COULD BE EXTENDED DEPENDING ON THE PROGRESS OF THE VIRUS, SO PLEASE STAY TUNED! Bowerbird presents Fennesz and Britton Powell Austrian laptop music pioneer Fennesz recently released his first album in nearly five years, Agora, and it reinforces the inscrutable beauty of his aesthetic. His work is steeped in romanticism, with each piece patiently wending its way through meticulously plotted narratives of remarkable concision, marked by orchestral swells and shimmering ambience. Using a blend of synthesizers and ingeniously processed electric guitar, he sculpts richly textured movements that seamlessly layer post-industrial noises—whirrs, clicks, feedback, and machine-like throbs—soaring washes of symphonic color, and hydroplaning drones, all of which coalesce into glorious transmissions of interiority. While the title of the opening piece, “In My Room,” references his longstanding ardor for the Beach Boys, in the hands of Fennesz it conveys a profound expression of communication, opening doors to the world.New York electronic music composer and performer Britton Powell is deeply invested the psycho-acoustic possibilities of minimalism. Perhaps known best for his collaborations with artists like Jon Gibson, Matmos, Leila Bodreuil, and Sensations Fix, his own pieces and DJ mixes combine hypnotic sonic patterns, subtly knotted textural contrasts, and colliding polyrhythms. As much an advocate as an artist, he’s run various underground music space and operates the experimental label Catch Wave Ltd.ABOUT THE ARTISTS
FENNESZ is an Austrian guitarist and composer living in Vienna. Using a filtered and treated electric guitar as the starting point for his lush soundscapes, Fennesz has created a personal and groundbreaking discourse throughout his career. Perhaps sculpting the last truly unique vision for the guitar, his luminant compositions are anything but sterile experiments. Fennesz’s world of sound unfolds and resembles sensitive, telescopic recordings of rainforest insect life or natural atmospheric occurrences, an inherent naturalism permeating each piece. In addition to his prolific output as a solo artist, and his ongoing investigation of the limits of noise, automatic composition, field music or contemporary classical, Fennesz is also a frequent collaborator with other luminaries of the scene. These include artists such as Alva Noto, Oren Ambarchi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Keith Rowe, Peter Rehberg, David Sylvian, and Jim O’Rourke.BRITTON POWELL is an American composer and curator living in New York City. Through means of electronics, video, and percussion his work explores psycho-acoustic phenomena, minimalism, and traditions of ethnographic music. The composer’s new work “If Anything Is” explores themes of hyper-reality and ambient capitalism by means of a staged mixed-media environment designed for sound and multichannel video. Filmed and recorded over the course of 2018 & 2019 the work explores an ecstatic exchange of experience in the face of a much-accelerated media and commercial world. A meditation on the intersection of technology and urban landscape, the work charts a map through scenes filmed in New York City and points the audience towards the blissful collision at this crossing. Powell’s music has appeared at venues around the world including Centre Pompidou (Paris), The Barbican Center (London), Today’s Art Festival (Den Haag), Ultima Festival (Oslo), Unsound Festival (Krakow), The Kitchen (NYC), and The Guggenheim House (Japan). His work has been featured in The New Yorker, Washington Post, Bomb Magazine, and Wire Magazine among others. He has worked on recordings for Warp Records, Mexican Summer Records, Unseen Worlds, and Catch Wave Ltd. Powell works and collaborates with Jon Hassell, Matmos, Lucy Railton, Jon Gibson, Huerco S, and many others.Admission is FREE Sadly, the remainder of Fennesz's 2020 tour has been cancelledIN TAKING STEPS TO SLOW THE SPREAD OF COVID-19, THE ROTUNDA HAS BEEN ORDERED TO SHUT DOWN. Gabrielle’s work as a healing arts practitioner and instructor continues to intersect with her work as an inter-disciplinary performance artist through the incorporation of Internal and Martial Arts forms in combination with Dance, Poetry and Theater presentation.
