We are reaching out to children and adults who have either been exposed to problems such as bullying, trauma and substance abuse, or have limited or no access to the arts. We aim to increase access to youth opera, to augment the programs at all schools in the Philadelphia area. We intend to bring opera performances to adults through presentations at community-based organizations, such as rehabilitation centers and other adult programs. People will walk away from our shows with the feeling that they have experienced something magical that is not merely entertainment. People will walk away with a message of hope and encouragement.

Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury - sitar with Sanjib Kumar Pal - tablaIndrajit Roy-Chowdhury is a disciple of the sitar maestro Pandit Subroto Roy-Chowdhury. Groomed in the Veen-kar style of the Senia Gharana, which maintains the Dhrupadi origins of Indian Classical music, Indrajit strives to innovate while keeping a firm connection with the past. While completing his undergraduate studies at Duke University, Indrajit received the Bennenson Award for the Arts to further his study of Indian Classical music. Since then he has taken the profession of a full-time sitarist and has performed on stages across the world including such prestigious venues as Gyan Mancha (Kolkata), Hammerstein Ballroom (New York), Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.) and has had his concerts telecast by Doordarshan (Indian National Television). During the 2010 Fall semester Indrajit was a visiting faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania and taught the University's sitar course.Sanjib Kumar Pal is a well-established tabla player based in Calcutta, known for his balanced and clear accompaniment to vocal and instrumental music. Groomed from the age of seven under teachers of his home town, Navadvip Dham, Sunil Kammakan and Hridoy Biswas of the Ustad Keramatulla Khan style of the Farukhabad Gharana, Sanjib showed promise at early age at the youth festival, Nadia district.In 1988 he became a disciple of legendary tabla maestro Pandit Shankar Gosh, well known for his brilliant accompaniement to Ustad Ali Akhbar Khan, Ustad Vilayet Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar. From Pandit Gosh he learned intensively the art of tabla playing both as a solo performer and as an enrichment support to the main performer when accompanying. He still continues research and practice under his maestro´s able guidance.

YOUTH NIGHT OPEN MIC & POETRY SLAM

 (nearly) Every 3rd Saturday of the month, except August, PYPM hosts a youth-led open mic and poetry slam for teens to come and share their work in a safe, uncensored environment at The Rotunda. Young people from all over Philadelphia come to express themselves in front of a supportive audience where they can grab the microphone and be heard!

Date: Every 3rd Saturday from September through June Time: 6PM sharp (doors open at 5:45PM) PYPM YOUTH SLAM TEAM & BRAVE NEW VOICES Teens who participate in the slams earn points to qualify for the semi-final and final slams to make the PYPM Slam Team. Each year PYPM sends a Youth Slam Team to represent Philadelphia at The Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Festival to compete against over 50 other poetry teams from around the world. The festival is held in various cities across the U.S giving teens an opportunity to travel, from Los Angeles to Chicago. Youth poets earn their spot on the team by competing in Youth Night Slams. PYPM won first place at Brave New Voices in 2011 and 2007. Admission: $7 youth and Students with ID / $10 Adults / ($5 for students who attend workshop that day)

Easthampton, MA- CARRY IT FORWARD: Celebrate the Children of Resistance stops in Philadelphia on September 23, 2014. 

This 90-minute film dramatizes the last four days of the lives of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg and celebrates current movements for peace, civil liberties, climate justice, immigrants' rights, and other progressive struggles from Idle No More to efforts to combat police brutality, to the fight to free political prisoners and more. Angela Davis narrates, and Eve Ensler and Cotter Smith star as Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, with readings of the couple’s  letters from death row. Other cast members bring to life the stories of families engaged in progressive struggles today, including international human rights attorney Lennox Hinds, Shola Lynch (acclaimed director of Free Angela and All Political Prisoners and other films), and Djibril Toure (a NYC-based community organizer active with Communities United for Police Reform, Malcom X Grassroots Movement and Copwatch) who portray political prisoner Russell Maroon Shoatz and members of his family. Radical hip hop group Rebel Diaz and folk duo Mike + Ruthy perform their own brands of protest music, and Robert and Michael Meeropol recount what it was like to grow up as the Rosenbergs’ sons.

The one Philadelphia screening of CARRY IT FORWARD will take place at 7:00 pm on September 23, 2014 (doors open at 6:30), at The Rotunda, located at 4014 Walnut St. (www.therotunda.org). The event is a benefit for the Rosenberg Fund for Children (www.rfc.org). Admission is a suggested donation of $10, and additional, tax-deductible donations to the Fund are welcome. The screening is co-sponsored by The Shoatz Family and Free Maroon Philly, with support from Prison Radio.

The Rosenberg Fund for Children (RFC) is a public foundation that awards grants to help with the educational and emotional needs of the children of targeted activists in the U.S., as well as youth who are targeted for their own activism. Grant recipients’ parents – or young activists themselves – are struggling to wage peace; preserve civil liberties; safeguard the  environment; combat racism, poverty and homophobia; and organize on behalf of immigrants, prisoners, workers and others whose lives are under threat. The RFC was founded by the Rosenbergs’ son, Robert Meeropol, and is led today by Robert’s daughter, Jenn Meeropol, who will be present at the screening and is available for media interviews in advance of the event.

Avant-garde super-group Haitian Rail is proud to announce the release of Solarists, their second full-length album, on New Atlantis Reocrds. This record brashly charts the common spaces between creative noise rock and the jazz avant-garde, while shattering the restrictive barriers between them. Formerly dubbed Ricart/Millevoi Quartet, with a stellar debut LP via Gaffer Records, of which The Wire described as "An object lesson in how free improvised music should sound when played with authenticity and sincerity," this new lineup features guitarist Nick Millevoi (Many Arms, Deveykus), bassist Edward Ricart (Hyrrokkin, William Hooker Trio), trombonist Dan Blacksberg (Deveykus, Anthony Braxton), and drummer Kevin Shea (Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Talibam!). This revamped iteration of the group raises the high watermark set by their debut, offering a set of roiling new compositions, buoyed by virtuosic technique and unbounded kinetic energy.

In the Dan Blacksberg Trio, the innovative and genre-defying trombonist brings an expansive and creative new vision to the cutting-edge jazz traditions of pioneers like Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Albert Ayler. The trio is celebrating the release of Perilous Architecture, their second album for Lithuanian-based NoBusiness Records. Blacksberg has penned a set of music that pushes at the technical and timbral limits of his instrument, opening up into far-reaching sounds worlds while maintaining a melodic rootsiness. Backed up by the powerful rhythm of Matt Engle (Shot X Shot) on bass, and Mike Szekely (Anthony Braxton Quartet) on drums, the Dan Blacksberg Trio creates a driving mixture of noise, chromatic lyricism, and everything in between.

Each summer UCD, Penn and The Rotunda invite internationally-acclaimed ensembles—such as the Millennial Territory Orchestra and the Sun Ra Arkestra— to play free outdoor concerts that capture the soul of the neighborhood. Since its beginning, the 40th Street Summer Series has enlivened the 40th Street corridor (now home to Distrito, HipCityVeg, RAVE Cinema, Ben & Jerry’s, and more) during the typically slow summer months by increasing patronage at nearby retailers and building upon the existing vibrancy of 40th Street, while providing entertaining, enriching and safe outlets for families, visitors and students.

In addition to live music, there is a face painter, balloon artist, human circus acts such as juggling and tight rope walking, fire artists (after the music), and free samples from Ben & Jerry's. 

A Philadelphia favorite, Man Man is an energetic group of talented musicians and vocalists who are undeniably ambitious and focused on greatness. The 2013 release of their On Oni Pond, is a compelling mash-up of Fear Of Music era Talking Heads, classic soul, psychedelia, hip hop, and 50’s rock and roll. With its imaginative yet economical rhythms, huge hooks, and overriding sense of urgency, On Oni Pond melds these seemingly disparate influences into an unexpectedly lush, melodic album, exquisitely consolidated by the band’s unique and affecting vision. Opening is Needle Driver, a new collaboration by three NYC musicians bridging the realms of extreme rock and the classical avant-garde.

Named "NYC's Best Guitarist of 2012" by the Village Voice, his work has been profiled by NPR, The Wall Street Journal, Fret Board Journal, and the UK avant-music magazine, Wire. Needle Driver's work typically reflects the energy, dissonance, and hardworking ethos of the creative rock underground while harnessing hyperreal technique and impeccable articulation to stratify ecstatic cacophony, bridging the realms of extreme rock and the classical avant-garde.

Allison Miller: has performed with songwriting vocalists Ani DiFranco, Natalie Merchant, and Erin McKeown, and toured with avant-garde saxophonist Marty Ehrlich and organist Doctor Lonnie Smith. She has been touring with Brandi Carlile for the past two years.

Johnny Deblase is a bassist and composer from New York City and a member of genre-bending guitar trios Many Arms and Zevious. He also leads his own quartet and composes an eclectic mix of chamber and electronic music. Johnny has toured the US and Canada extensively and has released albums on Tzadik, Cuneiform Records, Engine-ESP, Majmua Music

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog * is a 2008 musical tragicomedy miniseries released in three acts and produced exclusively for internet distribution. Filmed and set in Los Angeles, the series tells the story of Dr. Horrible, an aspiring supervillain; Captain Hammer, his superhero nemesis; and Penny, their shared love interest.

Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog was written during the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike. The idea was to create something small and inexpensive, yet professionally done, in a way that would circumvent the issues that were being protested during the strike.

Upon its release, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog became an instant sensation, garnering the series much buzz and a number of awards. On October 31, 2008, Time magazine named it #15 in Time's Top 50 Inventions of 2008. It also won the People's Choice Award for "Favorite Online Sensation", and the 2009 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. In the inaugural 2009 Streamy Awards for web television, Dr. Horrible won seven awards. It also won a 2009 Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class – Short-format Live-Action Entertainment Programs.
