Workshop: 7-8pm Doors: 8:30pm Show starts: 9pm Sharp A poetry slam is a competition between poets performing original work judged by members of the audience. This poetry slam is organized by Jacob Winterstein, Kai Davis and Jasmine Combs. In January NO CIS-MEN will touch the stage and the winner gets a $150 cash prize! Come watch, perform, or judge. **Poets wishing to compete should arrive before 8:40PM to put their names in the hat. Poets who put their name in the hat pay $5. At 9:00pm poets names will be picked out of the hat. If more than 13 poets put their name in the hat we'll have a Haiku slam off at 8:45pm to determine who gets to slam. Some poets will be pre-selected.* The Pigeon* is excited to announce that this month's feature is: RAYCH JACKSON: Rachel “Raych” Jackson is a writer, educator and performer. While teaching third and fourth grade in Chicago Public Schools, Jackson competed on numerous national poetry teams and individual competitions. Her poems have gained over 2 million views on YouTube. She is the 2017 NUPIC Champion and a 2017 Pink Door fellow. Jackson recently voiced 'DJ Raych' in the Jackbox game, Mad Verse City. Her latest play, “Emotions & Bots”, premiered at the Woerdz Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland. Jackson wrote a room dedicated to her city for 29Rooms' first installment in Chicago, through Refinery 29. She co-created and co-hosts Big Kid Slam, a monthly poetry show in Chicago. Jackson’s work has been published by many— including Poetry Magazine, The Rumpus, The Shallow Ends, and Washington Square Review. The Secret Cinema begins new season at The Rotundawith FOUR FILMSThe Secret Cinema will begin a new year and a new season at The Rotunda, with a brand new program called FOUR FILMS. The program, to be presented on Thursday, January 9, consists of four short films, which together make up a feature length program.However, the four films of FOUR FILMS have nothing to do with each other. What they have in common is that we have never shown them before, are unlikely to have been seen by most people, and they are all very interesting. Each one is quite good.There will be one complete show at 8:00 pm. Admission is FREE.All Secret Cinema presentations are projected in 16mm film on a giant screen (not video).This screening is part of The Rotunda's ongoing "Bright Bulb Screening Series," which offers free movies on the second Thursday of every month, throughout the year.The four films of FOUR FILMS are:THE ENCHANTED HILL: THE STORY OF SAN SIMEON (1963) - An excellent documentary about William Randolph Hearst's lavish mansion, which was the inspiration for CITIZEN KANE's Xanadu. Filmed at Riga Studios in Latvia.DIRECTORS AT WORK: THE DIRECTOR AND THE IMAGE (1982, Dir: Carl Workman) - Produced by David Shepard for the Directors Guild of America, this project took great advantage of access to the great film directors of the day and of the past. Discussing their careers are Rouben Mamoulian, Alfred Hitchcock, Alan Jay Pakula, Vincente Minnelli, King Vidor and more, and generous clips from their work are shown.GEISHA GIRL (1934?) - This film is a bit of a mystery, and we can find almost no information about it, online or elsewhere. Was it a sound re-release of a film shot silent? A condensed version of a longer film (its producer, Elmer Clifton, was reported in a 1932 trade publication to have contracted with a Japanese filmmaker to shoot scenes for a FEATURE called THE LIFE OF A GEISHA GIRL)? We may never learn, but this reel nonetheless presents a fascinating depiction of the geisha tradition.There will be one complete show at 8:00 pm. Admission is FREE.

The Philadelphia Science Fiction Society Annual Meeting and Elections The Philadelphia Science Fiction Society is a non-profit organization that meets to discuss and promote science fiction and fantasy in literature, the arts, and popular culture. P.S.F.S. a 501c(3) tax exempt not-for-profit corporation.Membership in the society is open to everyone. Becoming a member is easy. Attend your first meeting; we'll say "Hello." At your second meeting, you can nominate yourself for membership or ask someone else to nominate you. At the next meeting you attend following your nomination, you're eligible to be voted in as a General Member. Our current dues are $42 for a full year ($72 for couples). Attendance of 4 meetings each year maintains the status of Active Member.General meetings are held on the 2nd Friday of each month and feature a guest speaker involved in some area of Science Fiction or Fantasy, such as writers, editors, artists,etc. See Meeting Notices for more information. Bowerbird presents Ikue Mori + Charmaine LeeSince her emergence in New York’s No Wave scene in the late 1970s as a percussionist in DNA, Japanese native Ikue Mori has used auto didacticism to forge one of the most singular aesthetics in contemporary music. Since switching from a richly intuitive approach to drums to electronics during the 1980s she’s refined an elusive, liquid sound that translated her rhythmic vocabulary into a shape-spilling mass of daydreaming gurgles, bloops, smears, rattles, and fractals that’s at once serene and unsettling. She’s a master improviser, adapting a recognizable sonic palette from real-time processing according to the needs and variables of each situation. Over the years she’s formed inextricable bonds with musicians like John Zorn, Zeena Parkins, Craig Taborn, and Sylvie Courvoisier, among others, steadily enhancing within and adapting to each disparate context.New York improviser and composer Charmaine Lee has quickly become a force in experimental music circles in the last few years, parlaying her voice with staggering extended technique and electronics to create a forceful, elusive practice that shares more in common with noise and experimental approaches than conventional singing. Her wordless, cacophonous improvisations viscerally transmit ultra-high- pitched frequencies, manic vocal fry, and guttural shrieks manipulated with distortion, feedback, and objects like glass and water to deliver an unsettling attack that is simultaneously brittle and violent. Mori and Lee will each perform solo, followed by a duo set—a young partnership marked by exquisite tension, piercing timbre, and quicksilver exchange.Admission is FREE

A NEW YEARFor many cultures that attend to the lunar calendar, January 2020 marks not only the end of the Year of the Pig, but also the beginning of a new 12-year zodiac cycle. FORTUNE, a monthly small-run submission-based publication by and for queer Asian publics, will celebrate the end of its year-long run with forms as urgently iterative as they are new for us: a double-issue released by way of a festival, featuring performances by queer Asian artists. WHAT'S ON STAGEThis project, one in a series of gatherings that mark each issue’s release, will be of a scope larger than we’ve been able to produce. Though we make our practice tangible in print, our gatherings do the work of filling in the blanks, of giving life to shared references, of building real kinship amongst our network. This performance festival will feature modes of creative expression that extend beyond expectation of common language. Come out once more and celebrate...IT'S A PARTY :)It feels important, as we produce an event featuring work by a community collected sparingly in performance and print — that we document its production, too. So, our final double-issue will belabor the processing of this performance festival, an archiveable document of live event.This is a POC-centered event. Through storytelling and music, Mike Africa, Jr. shares the history of the MOVE Organization in an entertaining heartfelt slideshow presentation. The show illustrates the core beginning of MOVE prior to the 30-100 year prison sentence of the MOVE 9, up to the eventual release some 40+ years later. The show will finalize with a short description of MOVE’s plan for the future. The price of admission is $10-20. All proceeds benefits the MOVE Activist Gallery. Gathering IS b-boys/b-girls, pop-lockers, emcees, graffiti writers,
DJs, men, women, and children of all ages enjoying an organic,
community-based celebration of The struggle, the Love, and the culture
of Hip Hop. DJs spin Hiphop, breaks, and funk all night, and there are
open cyphas, a tag wall, and a featured performance and graffiti panel
each month. Admission is $3 before 10pm, $5 after 10pm.
