  • 8:00 PMIn the Sanctuary! Pericles
  • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Pericles is a man who cannot find safe harbor from the storms of fate. Original music and movement help create a dark world of assassins, brothels and shipwrecks for audiences to explore. This rarely produced Shakespearean epic marks the premiere of Die-Cast, founded by designer Thom Weaver and director Brenna Geffers.

    __

The die-cast process uses molten metals to completely fill a mold in order to create something new. This is how we view theater’s relationship to its space; the work should seek to fill and then be molded by the space it is in. We believe that the audience’s relationship to their environment can be as potent and transformative as their relationship to the text. We choose non- theatrical spaces and use them as a foundation from which the piece is built. Die-Cast was founded by director Brenna Geffers and designer Thom Weaver. We invite you to now exit the theater. Pericles is part of the 2017 Provincetown Tennessee Williams Festival on Cape Cod twptown.org

  • 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Andrew’s Video Vault at The Rotunda

FREE Screenings Continuous From 8 PMon the Second THURSDAY of Every Month!Since 2004, Andrew’s Video Vault is a free, once-a-month screening series at The Rotunda in West Philadelphia programed by film director and educator Andrew Repasky McElhinney.  Andrew’s Video Vault programs original, obscure, neglected, marginalized and commercial unavailable video media. It connects the West Philly neighborhood to the University of Pennsylvania community and fosters a multicultural examination of motion pictures in a relaxed, educational setting.

This program is made possible through the generous support of the Cinema Studies Program and The Rotunda at the University of Pennsylvania.

    VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.

SEPTEMBER 14 – BOLDLY INTO THE DARKSelected ShortsThe men and women who made these animated films were free; they did not have to answer to any studio, appeal to any demographic, or argue with actors, nor were they were bound by the laws of gravity, time and logic.  Each answered only to his or her heart and imagination.  As a result, these films go places and do things no feature film would dare… Begotten (1990 / 72 minutes)In Begotten, Edmund Elias Merhige separates the darkness from the light to reveal the beginning of everything: matter, motion, myth, sex and Cinema itself are born on the screen in blood and fire.  We are witness to forbidden rituals and images that conjure the savage poetry of James Dickey and terrible beauty of Ingmar Bergman.  Though we can’t look away, we feel we shouldn’t be watching…Guest Host and Curator: Ted Knighton

OCTOBER 12 – GRINDHOUSE GOTHICThe Witch Who Came From the Sea (1976 / 88 minutes)“Molly really knows how to cut men down to size!” was the tagline for this deeply atmospheric “video nasty” with great location cinematography, dramatic heft, and a haunting turn from Millie Perkins as Molly, who seems to leave a trail of deadly sexual multialtions in her wake, but why…? Toys Are Not For Children (1972 / 85 minutes)Jamie’s (Marcia Forbes) obsession with her absent father and the toys he gave her as a child ruins her marriage and leads her into a life of prostitution in this exploitation drama filled with equal parts of the bizarre and of melancholy.Guest Host and Curator: Mike Zaleski

NOVEMBER 9 – PRE-CODE COMEDYShow Girl in Hollywood (1930 / 77 minutes)Flapper comedienne Alice White stars in this musical comedy as an unemployed chorus girl who decides to leave Broadway and go to Hollywood to find a job in the new field of “talking pictures”, but finds it’s not as easy to get into the movies as she had hoped.Girl Crazy (1932 / 74 minutes)Zany vaudevillians Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey star in this George & Ira Gershwin-scored musical comedy. Gambler Woolsey hires taxi driver Wheeler to drive him to Custerville, Arizona, where the sheriffs always get bumped off. Woolsey tries to get out of paying his taxi bill by talking Wheeler into running for sheriff against the town’s nastiest bandit, and hilarity ensues.Guest Host and Curator: Andrew Gilmore

DECEMBER 14 – DIABOLICAL FRENCH DRAMAUnder The Sun of Satan [Sous le soleil de Satan] (1976 / 97 minutes)Gerard Depardieu stars in Maurice Pialat’s film about the nature of evil, where a particularly zealous priest in the French countryside becomes tempted by the devil and is obsessed with saving a young murderess (Sandrine Bonnaire) who has killed one of her lovers. The Devil, Probably [Le diable, probablement] (1977 / 95 minutes)Robert Bresson’s penultimate film follows the attempts of a suicidal young man (Antoine Monnier) to find some meaning or value in society by immersing himself in religion, politics, and even psychology, all for nought.Guest Host and Curator: Samm Deighan

Bad Activist: Sex Politics, Palestine and YOU

Two Jewish American activists. One sordid Jewish-Palestinian romance. One oppressive state! What will the heroines learn about Zionism, mismatched queer desires, cycles of abuse, political guilt-based objectification, and fantasies and realities of domination and submission? Find out more, in this rousing “comedy.”

    __

Humble Mumbles is a many-pronged project of a pollyannaish-Macchiavellian nature. As a multimedia storytelling project about Palestine and its many corollaries — such as trauma, guilt, injustice, sex and death — we strive to illuminate the libidinality of ho hum everyday politics. Our main frame is feminism. Our lay infrastructure is queer psychoanalytic, and our primary medium is podcast. The work addresses a variety of topics, but the main theme of each piece is a personal-political exploration of power and oppression. Sometimes we create lyrical anti-zionist academic screeds, apocryphal alternative grunge bands and dreamy, Richard Linklater-influenced talk-based theatre pieces such as this one (Bad Activist: Sex Politics, Palestine and You). • 8:00 PMKazuhisa Uchihashi + Daniel Fishkin: international collaboration between daxophone masters
  • 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

    Kazuhisa Uchihashi + Daniel Fishkin

Bowerbird is pleased to present the international collaboration between daxophone masters Daniel Fishkin (Philadelphia) and Kazuhisa Uchihashi (Japan).

The daxophone is a thin hardwood strip played with a bow, created by German improviser/inventor Hans Reichel in 1987. The instrument's sound, somewhere between a cello and a badger, ranges from furtive gurgles to wild screams. In 2005, Daniel Fishkin fell in love with this instrument and built one of his own. Eventually, he built hundreds of daxophones, becoming attuned to the sonic qualities of wood species and carved shapes. After Reichel’s death, the fate of this instrument became unclear. Kazuhisa Uchihashi, a creative partner of Reichel, is now a leading proponent of the daxophone. Uchihashi performs on Reichel's instruments, in addition to presenting installations and exhibits about the daxophone. In 2015, Fishkin met Uchihashi in Berlin. They represent different "schools" of daxophone - the new and the old, the postmodern and classical. This is their first public performance.

Kazuhisa Uchihashi (guitar, daxophone)Born in Osaka, Japan in 1959, Uchihashi plays a huge variety of music, having a distinctive musical voice in rock, jazz and improvised music. He composes widely for film, theatre and dance, including 30 years of work with the Japanese theatre group Ishina. He has worked worldwide with musicians including Hans Reichel, Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins, Han Bennink, Derek Bailey,Shelley Hirsch ,Christian Marclay and hundreds of improvisers. He organized the legendary Japanese power trio Altered States, active for over 27 years, which also worked inside Otomo Yoshihide's Ground Zero in the 1990s. In recent years, he has focused on pan-asian identity in music. Since 2010 he's traveled to Indonesia, Thailand and China to create special collaborative projects with local musicians. Mahanyawa is one of the best collaboration unit with SENYAWA from Indonesia. His special instrument, the daxophone, is a creation of the late guitarist/inventor, Hans Reichel, who was a creative partner of Uchihashi.

Daniel Fishkin (daxophone)Daniel Fishkin's ears are ringing. Composer, sound artist, and instrument builder. Completely ambivalent about music. Daniel studied with composer Maryanne Amacher and with multi-instrumentalist Mark Stewart. He has performed as a soloist on modular synthesizer with the American Symphony Orchestra, developed sound installations in abandoned concert halls, and played innumerable basement punk shows. Daniel's lifework investigating the aesthetics of hearing damage has received international press (Nature Journal, 2014); as an ally in the search for a cure, he has been awarded the title of "tinnitus ambassador" by the Deutsche Tinnitus-Stiftung. Recent activities include a Project Grant from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Daniel received his MA in Music Composition from Wesleyan University, has taught analog synthesis at Bard College, and, as fate would have it, is now pursuing his PhD at University of California, San Diego.

Ars Nova Workshop presentsFrode Gjerstad Quartet

    Frode Gjerstad, saxophone

    Steve Swell, trombone

    Johnny Ruun, bass

    Paal Nilssen-Love, drums

Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present the return of Norwegian saxophonist Frode Gjerstad, leading his quartet with trombonist Steve Swell, bassist Johnny Ruun and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love. “Gjerstad is a choice elicitor of out-of-the-ordinary elocutions, refusing gadgetry and reed-fueled bric-a-brac in favour of a strong sense of asymmetrical melody, trawling the improbable waters of curvilinear liberty in search of the most disparate notes, looking for composure while surrounded by havoc,” writes Paris Transatlantic Magazine about the Norwegian trumpeter and saxophonist Frode Gjerstad. A powerful force on the Norwegian free-jazz scene, Gjerstad has worked with Evan Parker, Borah Bergman, Peter Brötzmann, Sabir Mateen, William Parker, Derek Bailey and Han Bennink. In 1984, Gjerstad founded the Circulasione Totale Orchestra, a large ensemble with a rotating personnel that has included leading experimental musicians such as Louis Moholo-Moholo and Lasse Marhaug.  Steve Swell has been an active member of the NYC music community since 1975.  He has toured and recorded with artists as musically diverse as Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, Anthony Braxton, Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor and William Parker, has released over 40 CDs as a leader or co-leader and is a featured artist on more than 100 other releases. Paal Nilssen-Love, who has collaborated with Gjerstad since he was 15 years old, has worked with Ken Vandermark, Joe McPhee and Mats Gustafsson, among others.. Johnny Ruun has worked with Gjerstad's Circulasione Totale Orchestra on numerous occasions. Gjerstad’s trio with Ruun and Nilssen-Love was his first with all Norwegian musicians. Since 2010 they’ve released three live recordings – MIR, East Of West and HideOut. Swell expanded the group both in membership and nationality for its most recent release, At Constellation (Circulasione Totale, 2015).

  • 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Event Horizon Series presentsOff Land, Power Vacuum, Tim Motzer

Off Land - Formed in 2004 by Tim Dwyer, an artist and musician from New England. His sound has been influenced by meditative music such as Javanese gamelan and minimal drone, as well as various styles of 1990's electronic music. Dwyer's music is sparse yet texturally intricate, lying in some sort of electro-acoustic limbo between Namlook's more dusty ambient collaborations, literal Phonography and contemporary classical experimentalism. His latest album, 'On Earth', recently released on Stasis Recordings, embraces ambient techno with room to breathe. The album merges tectonic transitions between a tapestry of emotive sound. The seven tracks each act as their own micro-climate, their own continent, emulating the strange and wonderful world we all share.

Tim Motzer - Guitarist/improviser/composer Tim Motzer lives in a technicolor world of music. He is known for his distinct textural guitar voice utilizing looping, bowing, electronics, and prepared techniques. After 20 years of world touring, stunning collaborations, and over 70 albums of credits, this Philadelphia-based guitarist continues to traverse manifold territories in music.  In 2016-17, Tim toured the world playing concerts and jazz festivals with Bandit65, an improvising trio he co-leads with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel and drummer Gintas Janusonis.  He has collaborated with numerous musical luminaries: David Sylvian, Burnt Friedman, Jaki Liebezeit, poet Ursula Rucker, King Britt, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Markus Reuter, and Pat Mastelotto among others. In the world of modern dance, Motzer composes and performs live solo scores around the world. Most recently he has performed to sold out houses in Tokyo, Japan; Seoul, S. Korea; Oujda, Morocco; and Toronto, Canada.  He composes for film and video, and is a composer/accompanist for University of the Arts Dance in Philadelphia. He releases his genre-defying solo work and collaborations on 1k Recordings. As a leader, his projects include Orion Tango, Goldbug, Instant Takemitsu, & Tim Motzer SOLO.

Come join us for the Philly stop of Interminable presents : The Consecuencia Tour! This event will feature a night of good music, food, and "convivencia" - sharing energy and community. There'll be performances from three Philly powerhouses, so come early to watch and stay for the fandango at the end! The fandango is a communal celebration of son jarocho, a tradition from Veracruz, México. Similar to a jam session, but with specific etiquette - bring an acoustic instrument, and take cues from the musicians who have been studying it!

Jakeya is a highly experienced vocalist, performing a unique mix of gospel, jazz, classical, pop, rock, hip hop, r&b, and indie.

Interminable is a "diasporic space fusion" project, combining the jarana and son jarocho from Veracruz with the improv of jazz, the energy of rock, and an undercurrent of electronic rhythms.

Paulette Branson & Mixed People is "a funky, soul fusion band with hints of rock and world music...or as we like to call it - new age funk."

$10-15, sliding scale, no one turned away for lack of funds.  Families welcome.
