If there is a song you want to hear, just email the file to balterdanceparty@gmail.com. • 8:00 PMFree Screening: Lucrecia Martel's Zama, and Entranced Earth
  • 8:00 PM - 11:30 PM Free Screening: Lucrecia Martel's "Zama" and "Entranced Earth"South American Cinema Double Feature: Lucrecia Martel's hallucinatory anti-epic ZAMA (2017) and Glauber Rocha's ENTRANCED EARTH (aka TERRA EM TRANSE)ZAMA (2017, directed by Lucrecia Martel, 115 minutes, Argentina)In this dreamy, unorthodox film, Don Diego de Zama is a lowly 18th century mayor in an unnamed South American country, going slowly insane as he waits endlessly for a transfer within the Spanish empire. Based on the novel by Antonio di Benedetto, Martel's fourth feature has brought wide international acclaim, with Manohla Dargis of the NYTimes proclaiming it, “A Cinematic Marvel.” and ENTRANCED EARTH (aka TERRA EM TRANSE) (1967, directed by Glauber Rocha, 106 minutes, Brazil)One of the seminal films of Brazil's French New Wave-inspired “Cinema Novo” movement, directed by Glauber Rocha (BLACK GOD, WHITE DEVIL). In the fictional Eldorado, a journalist and poet (Jardel Filho) takes a quixotic journey through the politics of the Right and the Left before becoming disillusioned in this allegorical critique of modern Brazil. Originally deemed by the Brazilian government as “tarnishing the image of Brazil,” ENTRANCED EARTH would later play the Cannes Film festival, winning the “International Federation of Film Critics” award. Rocha's rebellious cinema was an acknowledged inspiration for Brazil's musical “Tropicalia” movement.- - - - - - -Reviews of ZAMA: “Poetic is a word that gets thrown around willy-nilly, but it fits perfectly here. So does woozy. It feels less like a film than a high fever, burning slow but hot in order to incinerate a virus....One of the best movies of the year.” - David Fear, Rolling Stone“What about Zama without sounding presumptuous or exaggerated? One could establish connections with the work of Terrence Malick, Werner Herzog, John Ford, Claire Denis, but Martel's cinema is unique, non-transferable, inimitable, incomparable... There is something of the order of the metaphysical, of the sensory (Martel's films even "smell") that transcends the formulas of narrative cinema and conventional dramatic construction.” - Otros Cines, Diego Batlle “Filled with situations that mirror the social and racial preconception of the time, this hypnotic tale of punishment and atrocious colonialism is an engrossing experience, likely to be turned into a cult film.” - Filipe Freitas, Film Threat“A brilliantly discomfiting portrait of European colonialism and its discontents, every sound and image tells the same sickening story....(Martel) brings "Zama" to a lyrical, terrifying close worthy of Werner Herzog or Joseph Conrad. The grand dream of human conquest ends, as it must, with a nightmarish descent into madness.” - Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times“Even as Martel steeps the film deep within Zama’s perspective, she observes his tortuous male pathos with the critical distance of a female gaze. He does cut a pitiful figure ... but he remains satiric, a parody of masculine and colonial self-importance.” - Devika Girish, Village Voice“A cinematic marvel.” - Manohla Dargis, NYTimesAdmission is FREE

  • 8:00 PMArs Nova pres. Chris Pitsiokos Unit
  • 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM Ars Nova WorkshoppresentsChris Pitsiokos UnitChris Pitsiokos, alto saxophone and electronicsSam Lisabeth, electric guitarHenry Fraser, electric bassPlease join us for a brain-rattling evening of extreme jazz with the Brooklyn-based Chris Pitsiokos Unit. The bracing music of saxophonist and composer Chris Pitsiokos combines the lyricism of jazz and the go-for-broke intensity of extreme rock forms and noise with the attention to detail and abstraction of contemporary classical music. His audacious quartet steamrolls over the borderlines between prog complexity, punk attitude, and jazz virtuosity with breakneck intensity. "Ecstatic, complex, punk-infused extreme-jazz… [Pitsiokos’ music features] traces of John Zorn’s full-scale eclecticism, Peter Brötzmann’s gale-force heft, the nihilistic noise of Lydia Lunch, and The Flying Luttenbachers’ ‘brutal prog.’ It’s no wonder the 20-something-year-old Pitsiokos has helped spearhead the nascent movement of fellow outliers shaping Brooklyn’s jazz underground." -Bandcamp Daily Pitsiokos has been praised by Rolling Stone for his “startlingly original vision” and “astonishingly fleet sax work.” The saxophonist has worked with such forward-looking luminaries as Tyshawn Sorey, Peter Evans, Joe Morris, Philip White, Otomo Yoshihide, C Spencer Yeh, Nate Wooley, Brandon Seabrook, Lydia Lunch, Paul Lytton, Miya Masaoka, Mick Barr, Susana Santos Silva, and many more. He was a contributor to Arcana VIII, a book of essays edited by John Zorn, and was a resident at Zorn’s club the Stone in November 2016. In addition to performing and composing music, Pitsiokos was a longtime DJ at radio station WKCR-FM and has been producing concerts in Brooklyn and Manhattan for five years.Admission is FREE

Growing up, many of us identify with [white? European?] princesses whether we like them or not. Nowadays, princess camp, princess parties, princess movies/games/dresses/you name it are all the rage. How does that influence your life as an adult? How does it contribute to what you expect to get out of life, and out of other people? Here are a few generic questions: to get us thinking:Do you dream of being a princess one day? What exactly is the princess archetype? How do you fight it? Who are the princesses you grew up with and can you give them a voice? Are there positive aspects to emulating princesses, especially those who represent the people, come from non-European and non-Western backgrounds, and fight for liberation? How does the princess archetype shape gender roles? Where do boys, men, and non binary people fit in?As for the presentation: We want individual artists or groups to have their own slots for performance/presentation, but we want the entire group to hear your pitches first, see how you might work together on your pieces if that makes sense, and, eventually, decide on the order of the program. In doing this, all participants will have a hand in the finished public program. Gerald and Gina will be offering guidance on set lengths, ideas, and technical assistance. The objective is to stir up the subconscious and think about how we are being programmed by concepts like The Princess, which is probably the most effective icon in manipulating people.
